The classic number-merging puzzle, running entirely in your browser. Use the arrow keys (or swipe on a phone) to slide the tiles. When two tiles with the same number touch, they merge into one tile worth double. Keep merging to reach the 2048 tile — then keep going for 4096 and beyond.
How to Play 2048 (The Rules in 4 Steps)
- Slide everything at once. Every arrow-key press moves all tiles in that direction as far as they can go.
- Equal tiles merge. Two tiles showing the same number combine into one tile showing their sum — two 2s make a 4, two 4s make an 8.
- A new 2 or 4 appears on a random empty square after every move. If the board fills up and no merges are possible, the game is over.
- Reach 2048 to win — the game lets you continue playing for even higher tiles after you make it.
Five Tips That Actually Raise Your Score
- Pick one corner and never leave it. Keep your biggest tile locked in a corner (most players choose the bottom-right) and build the chain toward it.
- Use only two directions (e.g. down and right) as much as possible; every up or left move risks scattering your big tiles.
- Build a descending snake. Aim for 512 → 256 → 128 → 64 lined up next to your corner tile so merges cascade.
- Don't chase single merges. A move that merges one pair but wrecks your corner order is worse than a patient waiting move.
- Play the whole board. When stuck, scan for the direction that keeps the most large tiles adjacent — small chains recover faster than broken corners.
